How to share internet from a MacBook to an iPhone

iOS devices can share their internet connection with other devices, mobile and desktop. All you have to do is turn on the Hotspot. It can share WiFi and it can share your data plan. All you have to do is tap the little toggle in the Settings app. You can also share internet from a MacBook to an iPhone but it’s not the same as enabling a hotspot feature. Here’s what you need to do.

Need to share internet from a Windows 10 PC? It’s really easy.

Share internet from MacBook to iPhone

In order for this to work, you need to use a USB/data cable because the connection will be shared via the cable. A MacBook can’t connect to a Wireless network and also allow other devices to connect to its wireless network card.

On Mac

Open the Settings app and go to the Sharing group of settings. In the column on the left, look for ‘Content Caching’ and enable it. It takes a little time for it to start up. Once it is enabled, select the ‘Internet Connection’ option on the same screen.

On iPhone

Restart your iPhone. You will have to shut it down.

  • If you have an iPhone with a Home button, you can press and hold the side button and the Slide to power off switch will appear.
  • If you have an iPhone with no Home button, you have to press and hold the side button, as well as the volume Up and volume Down buttons until the Slide to power off switch appears.
  • Regardless of which iPhone model you have, if it’s running iOS 12, or later, you can open the Settings app and go to General. Scroll to the end and tap Shut Down.

You now have to turn the iPhone on. Connect the iPhone to the Mac via the data cable and it will automatically power on. If you have WiFi and/or mobile data enabled, you can turn it off if you want. The iPhone will be able to use the internet connection from the MacBook. It might take a little time for the iPhone to start using the connection but it should not take more than five minutes.

You can connect additional iOS devices to the Mac if you have an available USB port. Make sure the iPhone (or iPad) is unlocked and if prompted to, choose to trust the Mac that the device is connected to.

The iPhone will give preference to any WiFi networks that it is already connected to so if you do not want it to use the wireless network, you should turn WiFi off.
