How to create a multiboot USB drive on Windows 10

You can install both Windows 10 and any Linux OS from a USB drive. All you need is the OS image, a USB drive with enough space to accommodate the files and a little extra space for unpacking them, and an app that can burn the disc image to the USB. The image burning process takes a little time but there are GUI apps that take care of most things. You can install multiple operating systems on a system but you can also use a single USB and burn multiple OS disc images on it. All you need is the right tool and you can create a multiboot USB drive.

The tool we’re recommending for creating a multiboot USB drive on Windows 10 is YUMI. The reason we’re recommending it is that you can use it to burn both a Linux and a Windows image. Not all disc burning tools support both these types of images.

Download YUMI.

YUMI can download a Ubuntu image but it can’t download an ISO image for Windows. That said, it’s probably a good idea to download images for the OS you want to burn. At the same time, make sure the USB drive you’re using has enough space to accommodate all the OS images you’re going to burn to it.

  1. Connect the USB to your system. Run YUMI and select the drive.
  2. Select the type of OS image you’re going to be burning by opening the Step 2 dropdown.
  3. Select the OS image. If you want, you can also choose to change what file system the drive is formatted on, and whether or not to wipe it though the app might change these settings to accommodate the type of OS image you’re burning.
  4. Click Create and allow the app to burn the image. It will take some time to complete.
