How to enable dynamic browser selection on Windows 10

Every operating system has a default web browser that is set by the user. The default browser handles all web calls e.g., if you click a link that’s been shared over Skype, it will open in your default browser.

The default browser can be changed at any time and there isn’t anything stopping you from running other browsers alongside it. The only difference is that web calls will be sent to the default browser unless you manually paste them into a different one.

If you have to use multiple browsers and do not want to automatically send everything to the default browser, you have to enable dynamic browser selection.

Dynamic browser selection on Windows 10

Dynamic browser selection allows users to pick and choose which browser will be used to open a link. Instead of a web call automatically being sent to the default browser, you will instead be asked to choose one of the browsers installed on your Windows 10 system.

Dynamic browser selection isn’t a stock Windows 10 feature. To get it, you need to install an app called BrowserSelector.

  1. Download and install BrowserSelector from the Microsoft Store.
  2. Run the app and click ‘Settings’.
  3. Click the make default browser button.
  4. Accept the UAC prompt.
  5. Open the Settings app (Win+I keyboard shortcut).
  6. Go to Apps>Defaults app.
  7. Click Web Browser and select BrowserSelector.

  2. Click Add at the bottom.
  3. Select Installed Browsers.
  4. Select an installed browser from the list.
  5. Repeat until you’ve added all the browsers you normally use.

Conclusion

Users generally stick to one browser but not all browsers are the same and some work better than others for certain tasks. BrowserSelection can open a browser if it isn’t already open and then open a link in it. It takes a little longer to open a browser but other than that, the app works flawlessly.

If you’re looking for something similar on macOS, we recommend using Browserasaurous which does the same thing but is slightly rough around the edges.

To restore the system to using just one default browser, change the browser from the Settings app and uninstall BrowserSelector.
